TEHRAN (IQNA) – The 16th edition of Morocco’s international Holy Quran competition started on Tuesday in the Western city of Casablanca.

Some 60 Contenders from African and Asian countries are competing in four categories of Quran memorization, Tarteel recitation, Tajweed, and Tafseer (Quran interpretation).

The contest will wrap up today, September 28, and winners will be announced on Friday.

The competition is annually organized by Morocco’s Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ministry.

The ministry says the competition is held on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) as part of the ministry’s efforts to promote Quran memorization, Tajweed, and Tafseer.

Morocco is a North African Arab country bordering the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Islam is the predominant religion in Morocco, with some 99 percent of the population adhering to it.
