TEHRAN (IQNA) – The grand Mufti of Jerusalem al-Quds issued a Fatwa (religious edict) on Ramadan fasting amid the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Sheikh Muhammad Ahmad Hussein said if it becomes certain from medical point of view that fasting is harmful for a coronavirus patient, he or she is allowed to break their fast, he said in the Fatwa, Maan news agency reported.

Those who skip fasting ought to compensate for it (recover a missed fasting) later when they are physically capable of doing it, the Fatwa added.

If one misses fasting in the entire holy month, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein said, they will also need to pay Kaffara (a religious donation of money or food made to help those in need).

He stressed that there is no hardship in religion (La Haraj fi Din).

The fasting month of Ramadan will begin next week.
