TEHRAN (IQNA) – A forum on Quranic and Islamic activities in Russia was held at the international section of the Tehran International Holy Quran Exhibition Thursday night.

The pavilion of the Islamic Seminaries’ International Educational and Research Complex hosted the program, which was addressed by Mikhail Simonov, an expert with the Moscow-based Ibn Sina Foundation.

He said Islam the second most practiced faith in Russia with about 15 to 20 million followers, adding that Muslims live in almost all republic of Russia, especially in the northern Caucasus, lower and middle Volga regions, Ural region, Siberia and large cities like Moscow, Saint Petersburg and Astrakhan.

He said most Muslims in Russia follow the Sunni Hanafi school of thought and are of Turkic origins, while there are also many Shafei Muslims in Moscow and Saint Petersburg as well as Shia Muslims in the Republic of Dagestan and in the Russian capital.

According to Simonov, Russia is among the non-Muslim countries with highest number of mosques. He put the number of mosques and Islamic prayer halls across the country at more than 8,000.  

He further elaborated on the Ramadan traditions among Muslims in different parts of Russia, including those related to Eid al-Fitr at the end of the holy month.

Simonov also highlighted the activities of the Ibn Sina Foundation, saying it is active in educational and research fields, holding in-person and online Islamic courses, publishing books and journals and participation in international events.

He added that the foundation has so far published nearly 450 books, some in cooperation with Russian universities, on subjects such as Quran, Quran and Hadith studies, Islamic philosophy, theology and mysticism, history of Islam, Islamic humanities, etc.

The 30th edition of the Tehran International Holy Quran Exhibition was launched at the Imam Khomeini (RA) Mosalla (prayer hall) in Tehran on Saturday and its international section was inaugurated two days later.

The international section will run for ten days.

Artists and Quran activists from 21 countries, including Pakistan, Iraq, India, Russia, Tunisia, Algeria, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Oman, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Kenya and Russia are taking part in the expo.

Quran translation, poetry and literature, civilization-making mosque, family and Quranic lifestyle, children, Quran-based consultations, grassroots Quranic institutes, Quranic education, promotion of the culture of Nahj al-Balagha, promotion of Sahifeh Sajjadiyeh, Quranic innovations, religious arts, and religious publications are among the expo’s other sections.

The event is annually organized by the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in the holy month of Ramadan, with the aim of promoting Quranic concepts and developing Quranic activities.

It showcases the latest Quranic achievements in the country as well as a variety of products dedicated to the promotion of the Holy Book.
