IQNA – Tens of thousands of people convened at Imam Khomeini Mosalla to observe Eid al-Fitr prayer on Wednesday.

The prayer was led by Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, Leader of the Islamic Revolution. Meanwhile, senior Iranian officials as well as military commanders also took part in the event which was broadcast live by the country’s national TV.

The prayers started at 8:30 in the morning, but masses of people began to arrive at Mosalla earlier in the morning.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran announced that with the sighting of the moon, Wednesday would be Eid al-Fitr.

Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, celebrates the conclusion of 29 or 30 days of fasting from dawn to sunset.

The first day of the month of Shawwal on the lunar calendar is called Eid al-Fitr, which is marked when the first crescent of the new moon is sighted.

In many Muslim countries, including Iran, moon-sighting committees are set up to confirm the start of the month of Shawwal.
