TEHRAN (IQNA) – Imam Hussein (AS) along with his family and companions started a movement in the year 61 after Hijra whose end was martyrdom on the path of God.

But centuries after their martyrdom, that movement is still alive and talked about.

To find out what was the reason that such a movement was formed, one can go back to the time of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), an era when Mecca’s unbelievers did not accept Islam because they were wealthy.

In fact, at the time when Imam Hussein (AS) began his uprising, the mentality of rejecting the truth because of being wealthy had not gone but had spread in society and caused people to stand against Hussein ibn Ali (AS).

There are different views and theories about Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising, for example the view that he was fully aware that he and his companions will be killed and considered it as unchanging destiny and led the uprising to get to that certain destiny.

Another theory is that Imam Hussein (AS) launched the uprising with the aim of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, which is a divine order. Promotion of Virtue was a return to true Islam and Prevention of Vice was standing against oppression and injustice.

A third theory holds that the goal Imam Hussein (A)S pursued by confronting Yazid was not killing or being killed, but was establishing Islamic rule.

These three theories can tighter explain the goals of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising. In fact, what Imam Hussein (AS) sought was safeguarding the religion of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and establishing a religious and justice-based government.

Imam Hussein (AS) said the goal of his uprising was reforming the society via Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice and the best way to reach that goal is through establishing a divine rule.

In letters written to prominent figures in different cities, Imam Hussein (AS) highlighted three important points: calling for acting upon the Book of Good and the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), importance of keeping alive the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and also paying attention to the truth and fighting fake behaviors( of the rulers of the time).
